Marble and Gilt Bilbao Mirror

European Ca. 1790

A fine example with the unusual feature of being mounted on an original backboard. Departing from the usual leaves and flowers on wires issuing from the urns at the top, this one has leaves, flowers and birds applied to the black and gilt backboard. These mirrors have traditionally been ascribed to being made in Spain or Portugal. Evidently large numbers of them were shipped from the port of Bilbao. There is however some thought that they may be from northern Europe or Scandinavia.

Price

$5500

Condition

Excellent. Unusually good antique condition with a few areas of gilt chips and minor rubbing to the gold.
The original mirror has a greenish cast and the silvering though intact is deteriorated.
