Chinese Rose Canton Mandarin Porcelain Shrimp Dish, Ca. 1840

China Ca. 1840

A fine example with strong colors and delineation. The surface has an orange peel glaze. The small central Mandarin court yard scene is surrounded by flowers, leafage, butterflies, an exotic bird and a pair of kissing carp.

I find there is a lack of reliable information of how to date rose canton of this variety. It is common to find attributions from the late 18th century to the late 19th century. As later productions seem to decline in quality I play it safe with a middle compromise.
