Antique Baroque Style Large Arm Chairs, Ca. 1890

Europe Ca. 1890

An unusual pair of late 19th century walnut Baroque style arm chairs. All the primary wood elements are rope twist carved including the feet. The upholstery is a dark red leather with gold accents and brass tack heads. The rear stiles are topped with brass ribbed ball finials. The seat rails are covered in dark red gold tooled leather with bands of pattered fabric which is possibly part horse hair.

Price

$1900

Condition

Structurally very sound. The finish is probably the original with appropriate wear. The upholstery has a very pleasing antique appearance except for the tops of the seats. A careful upholsterer could recover or cover over just the seats for very serviceable use as the spring cushioned foundation seems to be fine.

Measurements

44 7/8" high, 23" deep, 28 1/2" wide ( at the feet )

Pair of English Lyre Back Mahogany Side Chairs

A great decorative pair of late 18th century George III side chairs. The design of the backs is based on the ancient Greek stringed musical instrument that is undoubtedly the root of the fully developed modern concert pedal harp. The earliest depiction of a lyre is thought to be from Sumeria around 2800 BC.
