Argand Lamp Labeled J&T Cox, New York made around 1840 from brass and cut crystal. John and James Cox are known to have been in business from 1818 until 1853 with a retail shop in New York City. This two arm example, possibly made in England is made from brass and cut crystal. It has been electrified (needs re-wiring).

Argand lamps are a type of oil lamp invented in 1780 by Aimé Argand. Its output is 6 to 10 candles, brighter than that of earlier lamps. Its more complete combustion of the wick and oil than in other lamps which required frequent trimming of the wick. Examples are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Telfair Museum in Savannah, Georgia.
