Chinese Table, Tilt top Ca. 1880
China Ca. 1880
Chinese hard wood carved tilt top side table from the Victorian era. This table came from one of the local “Berkshire Cottages” that were scattered about in the southern part of Berkshire County built in the latter part of 19th and early 20th Centuries. The most famous and wealthy families that built a huge estate was Anson Phelps Stokes. In addition to wealthy estate builders were authors and artists. I first saw this table 40 years ago.
The table is a vocabulary of intricate Chinese carving for the Western taste consisting of scrolls, flower heads, leaves, paw feet and an egg and dart band on the top edge. I’m unfamiliar with Chinese woods but many people refer to this as “Chinese rosewood” as it resembles Brazilian rosewood in color and grain.
