Classical Secretary, Philadelphia Ca. 1830 – A very fine and rare stenciled mahogany fall front secretary made in the Philadelphia area.

The counter balanced fall front opens to reveal a gold tooled black leather writing surface and a bird’s eye and tiger maple interior with six drawers and 8 cubby holes. The top has an inset locking removable lid concealing an ample storage compartment. Below the fall front there are two stenciled doors opening to a one shelf compartment. Flanking the facade are two dark verdigris gold stenciled columns with carved capitols and turned bases. All resting upon a plinth above lion paw front feet topped by carved volutes.

The secondary wood visible in the interiors have what appears to be the original pale red paint.

Condition

Excellent condition with French polish finish and original stenciling. Small veneer replacements using antique wood and some replaced wood on the carved feet. The leather is new. Normal moderate scratches and stains on the polished interior bottom bird's eye maple board. Some dings, mostly on the plinth, feet and columns. Some wear to the stenciling.
