Phyfe Classical Style Upholstered Arm Chair

American Ca. 1900

This chair is approximately 100-120 years old and is probably a direct copy of the best design of an earlier 19th century New York example in the Phyfe manner. It is based on ancient Classical design elements. These are sometimes referred to with the French term of bergère
which is an upholstered arm chair that has upholstery covering the area from the arm rest to the frame as opposed to an open arm chair. It is made of mahogany.

An original early example is illustrated in Joseph Downs. American Furniture, The Federal Period, page 177-8, #135
