American Federal Period Two Drawer Stand/Sewing Table

United States 1800

A very fine high style country side table that works well as a regular two drawer side table or with the pleated compartment for madam’s sewing. This was purchased from Berry Tracy (1933-1984), a former curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s American wing. Berry being the clever person he was had this pleated bag made with snaps instead of the usual tacks for easy removal as most people don’t normally understand the sewing table in use before the Industrial Age. Another mark of Mr. Tracy’s hand is the “French Dipped” gilded hardware. The gilding keeps the brass from tarnishing and thus no need for yearly polishing. Much of the furniture Mr. Tracy had installed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art also had the brass fixtures gilded. It has very well figured tiger maple legs and bird’s eye maple drawer fronts and case sides. The top is cherry and as an added touch the drawers and bottom edges of the case have mahogany cross-banding. This is a rare find in sophisticated non-urban furniture.

The original cotter pin fastened handles and engraved brass appear to be original, pointing to the earlier part of the 1st half of the 18th century. […]
