Papier-Mâché Painted and Gilt Tray Signed B. Walton & Co.

A decorative papier-mâché English Victorian tray made in the mid 19th century. The typical black background is decorated with gold tracery, scrolls, dripping gold icicles, four alternating green reserves with floral reserves and a central floral spray. This example is signed by the maker on the underside B. Walton & Co. of Wolverhampton, England. Walton exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 at the Crystal Palace in London. It is now mounted on a stand probably made in the 3rd quarter of the 20th century.

Very good antique condition. Small areas of gold rubbing/flaking, all over cracquelure, bumps and dings and a small area where the original chip has been glued back in place.
