Herbert Morton Stoops, Ink on Paper, 1927

Herbert M. Stoops ( b. Utah 1887, d. New York City 1948 ) was a painter and illustrator known primarily for his Western American illustrations. From notes on the back, this water color was published in the American Magazine, March 1928 titled “The Old Roosters”. The subject looks like a Western movie set. It is hand painted in ink/water color signed lower left H M Stoops, ’27. A book he illustrated, “Stories of the Sioux” is included with this.

Stoops work appeared in the early pulp magazine “Blue Book”. In 1924 he published a book of his his WW I sketches “Inked Sketches of 1918”. He produced work forĀ  Cosmopolitan magazine, Good Housekeeping, American Legion Magazine and posters for the US government during WW II. He was also staff artist for the San Francisco Chronicle and the Chicago Tribune.

He won the Isidor Medal from the National Academy and is listed in “Who Was Who In American Art.
