Gilded French Large Mirror

France 20th Century

This gilded French mirror combines several styles but most closely resembles the 19th century Louis Phillipe taste. The crest is in the form of a pierced rococo shell within a scrolled cartouche flanked by small C scrolls and floral corner brackets. The rectangular body of the frame has an outer single gilded bead enclosing strips of mirror that are relief molded inverted spheres and six pyramid cut dividers. TheĀ  inner gilded frame is cove and gadroon molded. The mirror glass is edge beveled.

An educated guess is that it dates from the 1st half of the 20th Century. It is heavy and very well constructed. The backboards are wood with corner braces.

American Federal Dressing or Shaving Mirror, Ca. 1820

A fine high style example possibly made in Rhode Island in the first quarter of the 19th century. It is made from mahogany with pine and chestnut secondary woods. Curiously, it never had finials on the mirror supports.
