Worcester Blue Scale Mask Jug, Ca. 1770

England Ca. 1770

Worcester Blue Scale Jug with mask form spout made around 1770. The neck and body has 6 vignettes surrounded by gilt scrolls and cross-hatching, the largest featuring exotic birds in landscapes. Two small vignettes have a single bird on a sprig and a third behind the handle with butterflies . The body is molded all over in the cabbage leaf design. The under side has the blue square seal mark.

The Worcester factory under the ownership of Dr. John Wall started to make objects using the molded over-lapping cabbage leaf design by the mid 1750’s and examples of the mask spout by the end of the 1750’s.

For a documentation of these early Worcester products see The Illustrated Guide to WORCESTER PORCELAIN, 1751-1793 by Henry Sandon, first published in 1969.

Condition

Excellent condition except for repair to the handle which had come off in one piece (see photos before and after professional repair). There were only a few very small chips to that area. The restorer did a superior job using 23 carat gold. Other very slight flakes or rubbing to the gold.
