Coconut Cup with Silver Mounts

Colonial South American?? 19th century

A coconut cup with silver mounts, possibly South American Colonial. This is made from the hand carved shell of a small coconut and solid coin silver. The lid has a single initial “F” in old script engraved on the edge, probably for the owner. While it is stamped several times with the touch mark of the maker’s initials “GC”. There are no other marks such as date or location.

To be on the safe side, I’d loosely assign a 19th century date of manufacturing.

Leans a bit but probably made that way. There is a blob of glue? in the bottom of the interior, either to stabilize it or seal it from leaking.
