Side Chair, Massachusetts Ca. 1770 / This mahogany transitional side chair was probably made in the Salem, Massachusetts area. It has a cupid’s bow crest with carved ears, pierced back splat and cabriole front legs with sharp knees ending in pad feet.

It retains a very early finish, possibly the original. The slip seat frame appears to be original.

Condition

1 1/4 knee returns are replaced. The top of one front leg is cracked where it joins the seat rails. It is sturdy but should be repaired if put to regular use. Corner braces added to the interior of the seat rails perhaps 100 years ago. Otherwise normal signs of age and usage for a 250 year old chair.
