American Classical Candle Stand, Mahogany , Ca. 1825

America Ca. 1825

An American Classical Candle Stand of boldly developed design in carved mahogany with brass inlay. On first look it has much in common with New York designs of the period. I haven’t yet found a documented one directly related to this but after seeing a New York Classical drop leaf table at a rural auction near Albany, New York with this same brass inlay as in the center of my candle stand, Albany seems a distinct possibility. The Albany-Schenectady-Troy region produced a significant number of high quality pieces of furniture with characteristics of both New York City and Coastal New England.

The solid mahogany double elliptic tilting top has a small central brass inlay, a single line inlay near the edge of the top surface and the side edge of the top has an inlaid pierced brass band. The central post has a carved baluster turning above a swirl fluted turned squashed ball. The three legs have water leaf carving nearly the entire length and end in carved paw feet.

Condition

Very good antique condition. Retains an old finish. The inlaid pierced edge has buckled out slightly as the wood shrank with age. Someone decided rather than remove the inlay and shorten it, tacked it in place with small brass brads. Normal dings and bruises especially to the toes of the feet. The mounting block for the top has been cracked and secured with screws.

8 Toby Prestonpans Group, Ca. 1870

An assembled group of open salts, peppers, vinegars and one mustard pot purchased over a 35 year period for sale as one group. Evidently these little Toby condiments were made in England and Scotland.
