Pair Knife Blade Andirons, Ca. 1780

America Ca. 1780

Commonly referred to as knife blade andirons these were made with cast brass urn finials, penny feet and brass bands . They are examples of a  type made during the time of the early American Republic. The silhouette of these are related to an earlier form known from the mid eighteenth century with  posts cast in the round.

There are several of this type illustrated in THE BRASS BOOK by the Schiffers, pages 42-44

Very good antique condition. The billet bars may have been repaired a very long time ago by a traditional blacksmith.
