Antique New England Federal Chest of Drawers, Ca. 1825

A very nice example of a New England high style country chest of drawers made from bird’s eye maple, what appears to be apple wood, crotch birch, crotch cherry with bass wood and pine for secondary woods. The brass pulls are of the period but are not the originals (top two don’t match the rest). If I had to guess as to its place of origin I would think north eastern Massachusetts or southern New Hampshire.

At the top of the stiles are rectangular panels of crotch cherry and at the bottom are rectangular panels of crotch birch. Below the bottom drawer is a modified gadroon molded applied strip. It has a pleasing old finish and color.

Condition

Very good antique condition. There is a replaced piece at the right side of the back splash (see close up photo), normal small dings and finish blemishes. Due to normal shrinkage of the sides of the case, the drawers protrude about 3/8" further than when originally made. Because of the particular construction of this example it is not possible to adjust this without making unacceptable alterations.

44 1/4" High at the top of back splash, 42" Long, 21" Deep from the back to the front of the drawer pulls.
