European Porcelain Japanese Style Ivory Tusk Form Vase, Ca. 1890

Europe Ca. 1890

Modeled to accurately imitate a carved and hollowed out engraved section of an elephant’s tusk in the Japanese style. The modeling depicts two robed people in a rocky and mountainous landscape on one side and a single tree with rocks and mountains on the back. The pierced foot rim is meant to look like green soapstone. The underside has a raised mark that is a crown sitting on a diamond with incised letters “RW” which supposedly was registered in the German Trademark of Registry on May 2, 1896 by U. S. importers Lewis Straus & Sons in New York – who owned Macy’s. The bottom also has a painted “.86” and incised “Ni.2071” and “19”.
