Chinese Rose Canton Warming Plate, Ca. 1840

China Ca. 1840

A very fine quality example of the Rose Canton pallet featuring well delineated and richly colored butterflies, peonies, lilies, insects and what looks like a big strawberry. Warming plates are very scarce and would have originally been ordered in limited numbers compared with most other pieces comprising a dining service. It has a modestly undulating orange peel glaze.

I find there is a lack of reliable information of how to date rose canton of this variety. It is common to find attributions from the late 18th century to the late 19th century. As later productions seem to decline in quality I play it safe with a middle compromise.
