Rare George III Scenic Painted and Gilded Candle Stand

England circa 1810

A very rare survivor from the English early 19th century late Georgian period. It retains most of its original painted and gilded surface. The tilting top displays a scenic landscape with cows, mountains, trees, a rocky outcropping, a small gathering of picnickers and an early evening sky. The edge of the top, the post and the spider legs ending in spade feet are all ebonized with gold trim accents. The top, which appears to be mahogany is chamfered on the bottom edge to add to its visual delicacy. The close up images of the top have been lightened to more easily see the details of the scene. The underside of the top has written in pencil “From A E Hobday, St. Dunstan’s, Canterbury.” The top is 21.75″ X 15.75″. The height with the top up is 38″. The metal three fingered brace where the post and legs join is blacksmith made with the original screws.
