Historical Staffordshire “States” or Custom House Bowl

England Ca. 1830

Known by various names, this deep blue and white soup bowl has a rim with a swagged border with the names of the 1st 15 States. On the left is a portrait of George Washington in an oval reserve and a female figure representing America wearing a Mason’s apron. The center shows a building representing a Custom House. On the right is another female figure representing Independence. The blue color is rich not like some of these that are more slightly toward the grayish blue tone. It is clean and bright. The underside has the standard impressed mark of Clews Pottery.

Excellent condition except scattered shallow scratches in the deep part of the bowl that are for the most part unnoticeable with out very good vision or magnification.
