Large Early Derby Figure of Minerva, The Goddess of Wisdom

England 1765

A large rococo 18th century figure representing the Roman Goddess of Wisdom, Minerva. At her right foot is an owl perched on a stack of books. The shield of war has the snake haired face of Medusa whom she aided Perseus in slaying. She mounted Medusa’s head on her shield as anyone gazing at Medusa’s face would turn to stone. A fine example of the period and although it has the usual damage to the leafage and flower petals, remarkably both hands and fingers are undamaged.
